There are three accepted poker strategies that you simply most avoid if you want to win a poker tournament. I am sure you have read each one of the following poker gems many times, and now believe them to be poker truths. Unfortunately they are just plain wrong if you want to win.

Poker Strategy #1: “Play tight early in a no limit poker tournament.”

There are many ways to play in the early rounds of a poker tournament, yet you may have read this poker strategy most often. Why is this poker strategy so popular?

Think about it. If you got knocked out early, would you trust this guy’s opinion?

Unfortunately, the worst poker advice for no limit tournaments is to play tight early. Poker is about gambling. Poker tournaments are about winning. Embrace the risk in the game because you need chips to survive those bad beats. You are not going to outplay the luck in the game.

The right strategy early in a no limit tournament is to put at least 20% of your chips at risk with drawing hands like suited connectors, so you can win big pots.

Remember this: No one has ever folded their way to victory. Never.

Poker Strategy #2: “You need to be selectively aggressive to win a poker tournament.”

Oh my, is this nonsense or what? Being aggressive is bad, but being selectively aggressive is good.

I guess that key word “selectively” means that if you are aggressive and win you are being selective. But if you are aggressive and lose you are not being selective enough.

What if you go card dead for an hour and are bleeding out your chips? Are you being too selective by not being aggressive?

Forget this nonsense strategy. You need to be aggressive to win a poker tournament. You need to accumulate chips. Raise and re-raise by making the right plays.

Poker Strategy #3: “It depends.”

This has got to be the biggest joke of poker advice ever. It depends is so popular it’s become a pseudo strategy.

But what’s the winning play in a given situation? It depends…

I think we should put “it depends” next to “Depends” diapers..it’s all wet.

The leaking is over! Make the right play at the right time.

Of course sometimes in poker you make the right play at the wrong time. Yeah, you take a bad beat. But other times you will be wrong and make the wrong play at the right time. Yeah, you put a bad beat on your opponent.

Don’t think “it depends.” Ask yourself what is the right play at that moment. And if you still are not sure, err on the side of being aggressive by asking yourself the following:

“What move will put fear in the heart and mind of my opponent?”

Playing poker is not just a game of luck. To win in a game of poker wouldn’t depend on how lucky you are but instead it would depend on how skilled you are. Yes, poker is a game of skill and a game of psychology. Psychological warfare is a common practice on a poker table. This includes bluffing, misdirection and basically not letting your opponent know what you’re up to and avoid being read by your opponent. Once another player knows how you play and has an idea of the strategy you use, it would be all over for you. Every move you make could possibly be predictable by your opponent already. To counter this, it is important to vary your playing style and the hands that you play. This is called poker variations.

Poker variations or varying your hand plays is a crucial skill to learn in playing poker. This would separate the poker players from the poker champions. All good poker players have the skill of varying their hand plays and strategies. Like most of the skills in poker however, you learn this through experience. Actually playing the game is the best way to learn. It’s all about poker variations when it comes to misleading your opponent and keeping yourself safe from being read like a book by the opponent. Basically a player can have only a limited number of hands that he or she can play, however you cannot stick to only one hand to play. For example you’re playing Texas hold ‘em up poker. If you only call a bet whenever you have a king in hand then chances are one of your opponents would notice this and he or she would be able to predict what you have and what you will do. This would ensure you of a loss. However, before you can vary your hand play effectively you would have to hone your other poker skills first. Calculating probabilities and the odds of each hand is a skill that a player must gain in the early stages of learning how to be a good poker player. This is important to poker variations because it would be used for analyzing.

A player must know when to use poker variations. The best times to vary your hand play would be determined by what is currently happening. Analyze the players, the game and the odds then adjust your hand play depending on what you analyze and see. You would have to be able to analyze the situation first before being able to vary your hand play effectively. In a heads up play, it would be far easier to analyze the situation as the other factors have been removed.

There are a lot of skills involved in becoming a good poker player. This is not a simple game of luck like roulette or slot machines; this is a contest of knowledge, psychology and skill and it is important to gain all these things first before becoming a true poker champion.

Are you currently playing in the Party Poker room? Party Poker is one of the most popular online poker rooms, and has one of the highest number of players, according to PokerPulse statistics. Many different poker games are hosted in the room, including Omaha, Texas Holdem, Omaha Hi/Lo, 7 Card Stud and 7 Card Hi/Lo. One of the poker guides I have read is called the Secrets To Beating Party Poker. The aim of this article is to review this poker ebook, and give you a brief idea of what the guide can do for you.

Secrets To Beating Party Poker is a guide that focuses on how to win poker tournaments in Partypoker. This is because it takes into account party poker’s blind structure, chip counts, starting number of players and payouts. Many common mistakes that new players make are revealed in this guide, and it teaches how you can avoid these mistakes.

Secrets To Beating Party Poker: Main System

After the introduction to party poker, Parker Richardson goes into the strategies that are only effective in the party poker room. Its system requires very little thinking on the user’s part. There are not many things that you’ll need to understand about playing poker, except for the system that the author uses. The only decisions that the user needs to make is whether they are currently playing against loose or tight players.

Even though the author does not mention that you cannot use his system in other poker rooms, I have found the system to be ineffective in other poker rooms. It just does not work very well, and is very mediocre at best.

Conclusion

For you are thinking about buying Secrets To Beating Party Poker, I would only recommend it if you are planning of using it in party poker. One of the competitive advantages this guide has over other poker ebooks is that it is priced very low. If you are currently not playing in PartyPoker, this factor might make it worth trying though.
