There is a dispute among card historians as to the exact origins of the card game known as ‘Poker’. Some claim that it is a derivation of a centuries old Persian game called ‘Nas’, while others insist that it is Chinese in origin started Emperor Mu-tsung. The French imported a Spanish card game called ‘Pochen’ (which they renamed ‘Poque’) into New Orleans which most people agree was the beginning of the game we now know as Poker.

The game of Poker quickly spread up the Mississippi via the Riverboat gamblers of the 1800′s. The earliest written accounts of the card game of Poker was made by Jonathan H. Green where he referred to Poker in his writings as ‘The Cheating Game’, a name that probably refers to both the idea of ‘bluffing’ (a major part of the game and until Poker seldom found in card games) and the amount of money lost to those who were unfortunate enough to lose their money to the riverboat gamblers of the period.

Poker soon became a part of Americana during this country’s Wild West era. There was hardly a saloon or hotel that didn’t have a Poker game in progress either in a backroom or at a table.

Until recently Poker was relegated to a card game that was played at a ‘boy’s night out’ gathering or by professionals at casino games or illegal gambling houses. With the growth of the internet and the sudden rise of Poker variants such as “Texas Hold’ Em” Poker has now found its way into the social mainstream. Now everyone from housewives to professional gamblers are playing the game.

The game of poker has taken off like wildfire in both the United States and abroad. Poker sets are ‘flying’ out of the game stores and many stores have poker tables on back order because of the recent demand. There are now cable channels that are dedicated to the card game, and high stakes games are now televised nationally. Poker has become a true cultural phenomenon; one that the internet has taken full advantage of.

Before the advent of internet gaming sites, a poker player had to sit down at a table with other players in order to wager on a poker game. Since a major part of poker gambling involves ‘bluffing’ (pretending that you have a better hand than you actually have) the visual signals that one player could glean from another (often called ‘tells’) were critical for true gambling success. Now card players can play, wager, and bluff without ever seeing their opponent, shifting the emphasis from physiological clues to psychological pressure.

Currently there are literally hundreds of poker websites which cater to the beginner player all the way up to gambling poker professionals where hundreds of thousands of dollars can be won or lost on a single hand. Most of the online poker sites attempt to create a relaxed and ‘player-friendly’ environment in an attempt to allay the fears of first time players. Most allow new players a large amount of freedom to ‘roam’ the various ‘rooms’ and even observe actual games in progress so that they can get a ‘feel’ for the differences of online play verses the more traditional ‘live’ poker game.

The card game of poker has had an image overhaul. No longer is it a game played by card sharks and men in smoke filled rooms hidden away from the general public. It is now played by housewives, businessmen, and even little old ladies in Pasadena.

Playing poker is not just a game of luck. To win in a game of poker wouldn’t depend on how lucky you are but instead it would depend on how skilled you are. Yes, poker is a game of skill and a game of psychology. Psychological warfare is a common practice on a poker table. This includes bluffing, misdirection and basically not letting your opponent know what you’re up to and avoid being read by your opponent. Once another player knows how you play and has an idea of the strategy you use, it would be all over for you. Every move you make could possibly be predictable by your opponent already. To counter this, it is important to vary your playing style and the hands that you play. This is called poker variations.

Poker variations or varying your hand plays is a crucial skill to learn in playing poker. This would separate the poker players from the poker champions. All good poker players have the skill of varying their hand plays and strategies. Like most of the skills in poker however, you learn this through experience. Actually playing the game is the best way to learn. It’s all about poker variations when it comes to misleading your opponent and keeping yourself safe from being read like a book by the opponent. Basically a player can have only a limited number of hands that he or she can play, however you cannot stick to only one hand to play. For example you’re playing Texas hold ‘em up poker. If you only call a bet whenever you have a king in hand then chances are one of your opponents would notice this and he or she would be able to predict what you have and what you will do. This would ensure you of a loss. However, before you can vary your hand play effectively you would have to hone your other poker skills first. Calculating probabilities and the odds of each hand is a skill that a player must gain in the early stages of learning how to be a good poker player. This is important to poker variations because it would be used for analyzing.

A player must know when to use poker variations. The best times to vary your hand play would be determined by what is currently happening. Analyze the players, the game and the odds then adjust your hand play depending on what you analyze and see. You would have to be able to analyze the situation first before being able to vary your hand play effectively. In a heads up play, it would be far easier to analyze the situation as the other factors have been removed.

There are a lot of skills involved in becoming a good poker player. This is not a simple game of luck like Live Roulette Online or slot machines; this is a contest of knowledge, psychology and skill and it is important to gain all these things first before becoming a true poker champion.

Players Start To Arrive For WSOP Main Event Final Table
This Sunday, the November Nine will return to the scene where they had so much success earlier in the World Series of Poker main event. The nine finalists return to the tables at the Rio on Sunday, when they will begin play for the biggest prize in professional poker today. The $8 million top prize has become somewhat of an afterthought for players over the past couple of months. Once they reached the final table back in July, the players became instant celebrities, and they have spent the past few months juggling their fame with their practice schedule. all of the players have gone over in-depth strategies in their head over and over.Sunday, those strategies will all go out the window when the cards are finally dealt at the final table. The players will be able to execute the first few phases of their strategy, but likely will have to adjust on the fly as the cards will dictate which players move along in the tournament. A bad run of cards at this point could mean disaster for some of the finalists. One player who will be able to handle not receiving cards for the first portion of the main event will be chip leader Martin Stasko. He currently has over forty million in chips, more than doubling the stacks of players in six through nine positions. Eoghan O’Dea is second with just over 33 million in chips, and Matt Giannetti is third at 24,750,000. Sam Holden is the short stack, holding 12,375,000.The players started arriving last week, and have been homing their skills by playing in tournaments and cash games. The play will continue likely up until Saturday, when players will get a good night’s rest before they begin the grueling run that is the final table. Play will continue Sunday and Monday, and the champion is expected to be crowned sometime on Tuesday. November 2, 2011Posted By Tom JonesStaff Editor, CasinoGamblingWeb.comSubmit News!

Bet365 plans to go Australian with a gaming license
by Tuesday,30 Aug 2011 In order to apply for an Australian gaming license Bet365 have closed their site catering to players in the territory In an interesting turn of events the UK based online bookies, Bet 365, have closed down their Australian poker site in the lead up to their bid to gain an online sports license in the country. Players with the site were sent an email saying; Were in the process of applying for a sports betting licence in Australia. As part of our preparations for this, we regret to inform you that our Casino, Poker, Games and Bingo sites will no longer be available from week commencing 22nd August. Any funds currently in your Casino, Poker, Games and Bingo balances will be transferred to your Sports balance. Our Sports site will continue to work as normal. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”There is some doubt as to whether or not the company are still taking sports bets from Australian clients at the moment. Were this the case it would undoubtedly make it much harder or almost impossible for them to procure their betting license as they would be accepting bets in contravention of the current Interactive Gambling Act. Should they fall on the wrong side of the law they risk losing their credibility, customers and any potential in the country. The journalist Patrick Smith, writing in The Australian reported that; Under the Interactive Gambling Act provisions, any person found guilty of providing a prohibited service is liable to a fine of $110,000 a day and any company up to $1.1 million a dayThe lack of action by the AFP [Australian Federal Police] continues despite Australian Crime Commission advice that internationally the integrity of professional sports has been compromised, with organised criminal groups targeting the sector. The joint chief executive of Bet365, Denise Coates has said that I can confirm that we are in the process of applying for a licence in the Northern territory of Australia, once we have submitted the application and the regulatory authorities have had the chance to consider it, we will hopefully be in a position to comment further. The Australian online gaming industry represents a massive market and it is growing fast. Australian gaming has the highest loss per gambling adult in the world according to H2 Gambling Capital. Obtaining an Australian license would provide a huge boost in capital for a huge online gaming monolith like Bet365.

New US Online Poker Laws Could Bring Changing Of The Guard
The US is moving at a snail’s pace in changing their online poker laws, but it appears as though change is coming to the country. If, and when, that change occurs, there also could be a shift in the power rankings of the top players in the world.Phil Ivey has been considered by many to be the best player in the game over the past five years. A look at the September top ten rankings on ESPN, however, has Ivey off the list. It is the first time in a long time that the popular pro is not on the list, but it could be a sign of what is to come.”Online players have invaded the poker world at the professional level, and if the US changes their laws, the number of online pros will only increase,” said Poker Analyst Marc Goobsey. “It is a change at the top that could be always in flux due to how may players are now turning pro.”Back in the old days, it was the same fifty or one hundred players that dominated the cash games and the tournaments. The Internet poker age, however, has brought thousands of players to the tables, many of which have made a living playing the game, and some have actually become millionaires through the game. The future of the industry and the rankings hangs in the hands of US lawmakers.Several bills are on the table that would regulate online poker at a national level. Once that law is changed, and by all indications, the day is coming when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 is reversed, then a new wave of players will enter the poker scene. These players have been playing on the down low for several years, and are waiting to emerge once the laws change.”The days of ten or twenty players dominating the sport are over,” said Goobsey. “I wouldn’t be surprised if once the laws changed, we saw the entire industry shift to being Internet based, and at that point, players from small towns all across the country are going to make a name for themselves.” October 11, 2011Posted By Tom JonesStaff Editor, CasinoGamblingWeb.comSubmit News!

The WPT gets even better with more tournaments
by Thursday,8 Sep 2011 The WPT are to hold 5 additional tournaments in the 2011/12 season which are to be screened by Fox Sports The best poker tour in the world just got even better with the addition of five new tournaments to each season. The World Poker Tour (WPT) will now be stopping at two additional cities in the USA and another three in Europe. Jacksonville, Florida and Philadelphia in Pennsylvania are the two new tournaments being held in the US with Malta, Prague in the Czech Republic and Ireland playing host to the new tournaments on the massive poker tour. Season X of the WPT kicked off with the WPT Spain, held in Barcelona in May and has been moving from strength to strength ever since. The extra tournaments reflect just how popular the WPT has become all around the world. Since former US online poker professionals have been moving away from the USA in order to continue to practise their trade the extra stops will make it that much easier for the pros to make it to at least one or two of the tournaments over the course of the season. Since online poker was effectively taken away from US players interest in being able to watch the pro players at work has exploded with various television networks cashing in on the demand to watch high stakes poker. The WPT has been no exception to this with Fox Sports Net (FSN) showing the tournaments in their entirety and will be broadcast from the start of 2012. As well as the tournaments being screened there will also be two, one hour specials looking behind the scenes of the WPT and poker in general. This will compete with ESPNs coverage of the final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) as well as the poker covered by other television networks. Along with the new tournaments the WPT have also announced the formation of a Champions club which will afford special perks to all players who have won a WPT event. These perks include a personal concierge as well as VIP treatment at all WPT events. On top of this there is also a WPT champions cup engraved with the name of every WPT champion as well as a crystal trophy for the WPT player of the year. The first of these crystal trophies is to be awarded to Andy Frankenberger the season IX player of the year.

Online Poker is on its way back
by Monday,23 May 2011 Still reeling from the April crackdown online gaming begins lobbying Congress for a change in the law In the wake of the April crackdown on online gaming by US authorities the American Gaming Association (AGA) has begun its lobbying campaign in the US Congress to regulate online poker in the USA. There are plenty of benefits for the US government when it comes to the regulation of online poker and the AGAs support for such regulation serves as a reminder how many US gaming interests would like to get into the online poker market place. The move was announced at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington DC which was headed by the CEO of the AGA, Frank Fahrenkopf. Several other influential players in the world of online gaming including the President of Boyd Gaming, Keith Smith, The CEO of Ameristar Casinos Gordon Kanofsky and the President of Isle of Capri casino Virginia McDowell were also in attendance. The Associated Press reported Fahrenkopf as arguing that The millions of Americans who are playing poker online deserve to know that they are playing safely, with law abiding operators. Gaming leaders are said to be meeting with various congressmen in the coming days to discuss regulation in detail. The move by the AGA comes while 11 executives in the world of online gaming are under indictment for various charges, including money laundering and fraud. The big three poker sites had their assets and their domains frozen and hundreds of thousands of American poker players are still unable to get access to their funds. This isnt the first time that an attempt has been made to legalise online poker. Senator Harry Reid, representing the state of Nevada attempted to separate online poker from the rest of the online gaming as included in current legislation though his attempt fell flat in Congress. This hasnt stopped the AGA from continuing it the attempt to ensure the legalisation of online gaming in the future. Regulation will see US poker players playing against other players from the US only when they are online. Regulation would also ensure that the US government effectively becomes a partner in the online gaming industry and would take a hefty share of the profits as tax revenue. As it currently stands the world of online poker has lost its major source of players.
